Maestro Turbo competition

Opinions abound in pubs by drunken fools but the facts are I use to race these things in the cccr saloons against 205's GTEs impreza's audi turbos pulsars evos Focus RS etc... Industry respected Dialynx and Owen developments can vouch how fast they can go being their own machinery was beaten by it. There far from perfect for sure but as Clarkson said "they were v v fast"

The fastest 0-60 hatch of the 80's/90's.... still fast even today. Rust was an issue as with most stuff of the era. White knuckle ride created by poor brakes and understeer... ! Even so a race version did take on evo's and imprezas at Castle Combe race circuit with some success!!

These things came out to embarrass the Astra GTE 16 valvers, which they did until they crumbled away to dust soon after, awful cars.

Let’s have facts here:
The Mg was a small run special only around 500 were built were as the Astra was a main stream vehicle produced in much larger numbers.
Now for the performance facts:
MG Maestro Fuel system: Garret T3 turbo through single SU
Max Power: 150 bhp @ 5,100 rpm
Max Torque: 169 Ib/ft @ 3,500 rpm
Transmission: Type: 5 speed manual
Performance: 0-60 mph; 6.7 secs
Max Speed: 132 mph
Astra GTE 2.0 16v
How much power, Vauxhall Astra
156 Hp, 207 Nm
Hatchback 1988 2.0 GTE 16V
152.68 Ib.-ft.
How fast is the car, 1988 Astra
MK II CC 2.0 GTE 16V (156 Hp)?
217 km/h | 134.84 mph
0-100 km/h: 7.7 sec
0-60 mph: 7.3 sec
So the MAESTRO HAD A 2.0 turbocharged engine and yet produced less power than the Astra and although slightly quicker 0-60 it had a slower top speed
The Astra produced 6 hp more and slightly less torque
If you turbo charged a 16 v red top Astra it would produce power far and torque far in excess of the MG
The Astra also handled better, so they hardly embarrassed Astra drivers.
The MG was also a lighter car which helped its acceleration

You would be talking about a Mk2 Astra.. no it did not handle better, it was awful!. If you put a T16 16v head and engine management on the MG (Given your 16V turbo Astra would have EFI and 16V its only fair) you will have something that would still leave the Astra for dead
