Unlike the S600 or XJ12, the 750i could at least be had in the same standard wheelbase variant as other 7 Series models.

Not the best looking BMW 7 on FL, but one of the most charismatic cars ever.
Great look, V12 engine, comfortable limusine.

One of the all time best "muscle limusine"

I guess that's why BMW went different with their 7 Series unlike Mercedes with their S-Class. While their S600 and S65 AMG models were always had in LWB variants, the 750i V12 (and later 760i) models could at least be had in SWB variants. Mercedes didn't really bother making a SWB performance sedan at the time; but they finally came out with the S55 AMG and later the S63 AMG.

At the same time, Jaguar released the XJR with around the same power, and they finally released the Vanden Plas/Super V8 versions to replace both the XJ12 models and their Daimler Double Six variants.

Mercedes and Jaguar say they innovate, but BMW is the one that does innovate. Sporty enhancements and semi-sport-tuned suspension (BMW) > overengineered military technology (Mercedes) and American/Indian aluminum body construction mixed with Rover-quality interior (Jaguar).

But then Jaguar and Mercedes started to make the XJR and S55 (and later S63) AMG in LWB forms that BMW felt the need to build the M760Li.

(I'm not really counting Alpina because that's technically a Brabus/Lister competitor.)

Best looking BMW 7-er on fastestlaps.com. In the last 2 photos you can see the facelift model (1999-2001).
