1992 SHIFT-TRONIC With the advent of the BMW ALPINA B12 5,7 Coupé, ALPINA is the first automobile manufacturer to realise an electronic clutch management system termed ALPINA SHIFT-TRONIC. Foregoing use of the clutch is a breeze in light of the six-speed gearbox' dynamic driving characteristics

-Sportomatic?

Very good info, didn't know that. Thanks.

Vielen Dank!

@ LJUTICA
you refer to Alpina "Switch Tronic" the B12 5.7 Coupe was optional fitted with the Alpina "Shift Tronic"
it was build onto the standart 6speed Getrag gearbox and was developt together with LUK.
It was a electro hydraulic clutch controll system build onto a standart stick shift gear box!!!!

1992 SHIFT-TRONIC With the advent of the BMW ALPINA B12 5,7 Coupé, ALPINA is the first automobile manufacturer to realise an electronic clutch management system termed ALPINA SHIFT-TRONIC. Foregoing use of the clutch is a breeze in light of the six-speed gearbox' dynamic driving characteristics

thats how it was integrated to the GETRAG gear box..

About these transmissions,
yes B12 5.7 had 6-speed manual,BUT that Shift-Tronic is just auto 'box with Tiptronic mode.
It has been ZF 5HP30 5-speed auto with AGS (Adaptive Getriebesteuerung) made just slightly different for Alpina requirements by Zahnraeder Freiedrichsafen (ZF).
It has been referred to as "electro-hydraulic" for it had not only mechanical (hydraulic) valve actuators in gearbox, but these were electrohydraulic which made whole AGS system possible.
BTW,in (extr. rare) case of failure of AGS,it would work completely as a "normal" auto gearbox.

Georg

I believe you're wrong,6.0 litre V12 was reserved for E38 (7-series only). I don't think Alpina ever built E31 6.0,if they did, there'd be some evidence, either on Alpina's site or on the internet in general.
I did some research and found out the same as I thought:
http://www.e31.net/models.html

or

http://www.alpina-archive.com/?page_id=6

or

http://www.alpina-automobiles.com/en/models-alpina/model-history/bmw-8-series/e31.html

The only 6.0l engine that originated in 8-series was S70/1 engine meant for BMW M8 prototype, the car never got to the streets. It had 550ps.
The latter versions of that engine have been used in McLaren F1,the S70/2 and S70/3 versions.

Omg whatever already...

Yaspaa! German sources write 306kw. Since it's a German car we should ignore Anglo-Saxon sources (they are ALWAYS mixing PS and HP).

User avatar

Georg  15y ago

Read what Alpina claims about the Alpina B12 5.7 Coupe... 306kW and 416PS...5.8s

http://www.alpina-automobiles.com/ww/models-alpina/modell-historie/bmw-8er/e31.html

and now STOP claiming WRONG facts...

User avatar

Yaspaa  15y ago

You would still lose some acceleration and it's deffo 416 hp ;)

User avatar

Georg  15y ago

yes...

User avatar

Yaspaa  15y ago

Is that what they called the shift-tronic?

User avatar

Georg  15y ago

Yaspaa no you are incorrect...the poweroutput is 306kW and there was NO automatic version avaible... there was a 6sped manual and a 6speed electro hydraulic operated transmission... the electro hydraulic system was mounted on a standart 6speed manual gear box...

It is absolutely gorgeous. Better looking than some Ferraris and Lambos.

User avatar

BumRush  15y ago

Wouldnt exactly say beautiful......

User avatar

Yaspaa  15y ago

Anonymous you knucklehead this is a beautiful car, if you don't get that your obviously 12 or something.

User avatar

Yaspaa  15y ago

While we are at it the 850 CSI has always done 0-62 in 6.0 flat.

User avatar

Yaspaa  15y ago

422ps not 416ps the performance figures you have given are for the auto. the stats I give have a source Anonymous, please lwearn how to string a sentence together before 1993 auto exprees compares this with the 850 csi, the alpina was slighly quicker all round. Believe me georg, if I could change the stats I would be changing most of yours.

User avatar

Georg  15y ago

because they were loaded with every possible luxury gimick

User avatar

Anonymous  15y ago

why is so bloody heavy?

User avatar

Georg  15y ago

Ljutica

thats incorrect the most powerfull version was the Alpina B12 6.0 Coupe, with 430PS and 600Nm... it was even build nearly two times more than this 5.7l 416Ps version

User avatar

LJUTICA  15y ago

This car needed to be added,it's the most powerful (serial) version of state-of-the-art 8 series BMW.
And of course, it's super rare and expensive.

User avatar

Anonymous  15y ago
