Intruigingly an independent driver did a full lap of 7 mins 51 in the same article and 7 mins 49 for the 997.2 GT3.
I totally disagree with the view that Nissan cheated. If you look at the times for GTRs at ANY circuit, they are way up there with the fastest road cars. Even on a power circuit like Top Gears track, the GTR was faster than an LP640 Murcielago.
Ive driven at the ring many times since the GTR came out, and seeing them in action, this time is easy to believe- the GTRs go around effortlessly, average guys are putting down great times on open days without really chalening themselves or the car all the while contending with back markers and tourist- when you see one in action at the ring, you dont argue the claimed time
7. The car has a brilliant .27 drag co-efficient.
1. they added "5" bhp to what has been dynoed multiple times at over 500. they also fitted rays v-spec wheels.
2. there is hardly any power loss. with audi awd system it would take about 550 to get the same power to the ground.
3. there are only two straights where a powerful car will get to stretch its legs, together they will knock of no more than 5 seconds off a gt-r (even zr1, enzo etc.) there is a high speed section in the middle that might get a second but only the cars with enough downforce (enzo, mc12) will get their power down there.
4. the awd system and double clutch gearbox let it put all "500" ponies to the ground while exiting a corner, most rwd hypercars will need a split second before you can give it full power without killing yourself.
5. the double clutch gearbox means there is no gap in acceleration, so the gt-r can get in between the tighter corners much faster than the 600+ hp rwd stickshifts. they would just spin the wheels trying to accelerate that quick.
6. its a really easy car to drive, probably one of the only ones you can actually drive with confidence on the nurburgring.
if it hasnt to started to make sense at all you probably shouldnt be the one to claim nissan is cheating. there are other benchmarks of performance (other tracks) that measure performance more than time of year and driver.
