Cobalt SS/TC competition

Not only is this car fast off the show room floor but for $200 bucks for a tune you gain over a 100 hp and a full second less on the 1/4 mile, hows that for all the haters. Oh by the way, the car has had the tune for over 100,000 miles and no issues what so ever except tires ;)

Sad it's been 3 years since GM actually did something right. Would love to see this car come back with a simple 4.3L V6 version of the LS6 and then we would have the lightest, lowest, 300hp FWD car on the track.

my fuel economy stats for with over 20k miles track stands at 30.6 mpg

wildy variances above that are instances of me hypermiling.

I run pretty consistent 3:07 around VIR Grand and 2:15 on VIR Full in my little SS :) Very mild mods. Daily driven.

As an owner of a '10 Cobalt SS I can say that Rick James has no clue what he is talking about. The speed3 is less stable especially in middling quality asphalt.
The Cobalt SS is simply the best daily driver ever produced. I pull consistent 32mpg or better tanks of fuel and that is the absolute mileage, not just what I pull down the highway. that is boosting a fair bit. The EPA estimate low balls this car when driven by a good driver.

Here is a youtube video of John Heinricy driving the Cobalt SS around the Nurburgring. He gets it airborn a few times lol. The quality is crap, youtube removed the higher quality version. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urwJVnWHjiI

After taking this car to Heartland Park. I can honestly say it\'s light years better on the track than my old SRT-4.
The turn in and brakes are simply amazing. If anyone is looking for a cheap track car, that you can drive everyday look no further. I\'d recommend the gm stage 1 kit. While the kit may only add 30hp peak hp, it makes the torque band much more lovely for track days.

Rick James you seem to have no idea what you are talking about. This is designed as a daily driver, not some braging rights machine. If you had ever actually driven one, you would know this.
The reason for its better performance than the others is in its features. Virtually zero torque steer puts it ahead of most other FWD cars. Odd you compare it to much more expensive AWD cars.. of which is out performs.

Bare bones, light single purpose econobox with a potent T-4cyl. It’s quicker than the typical sport compact because it wasn’t designed to be a practical good daily driver. Mazda could’ve done the same thing with the speed 3 but they wanted to sell cars so they added creature comforts and thus more weight. Plus this Cobalt was designed to be quick in all the > bragging rights
categories such as 0-60 and the ¼ mile via launch control, 5-speed transmission gearing and no lift shift, etc. Regardless it’ll only be as quick as an EVO or STI and others if the conditions are nearly perfect.

This is a cool car but I think the engine is putting out a more than the manufacturers claimed 260ps when you look at the lap times it is coming up with.

@viking: i don\'t know about the mass produced part.. what would you consider the criteria? Anyway, based on the Nurburgring laptime the Renault Megane R26r is 6 seconds quicker (8:15.90 vs 8:22.85) although it has plastic rear windows, a rollcage and no backseats (or sounddeadening worth mentioning). Renault makes excellent fwd cars very capable on the track, they even do lift off oversteer if you know you\'re stuff!
Have a look on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYr61f_c_w4

This is probably the fastest mass produced Front Wheel Drive car on any track. Front wheel drive when set up properly can produce a fine track car, but is of course ultimately limited in traction out of corners (this cars horsepower to weight is probably near the practical limit for most road courses). I haven't driven one of these, but it must be easy to trail brake (slide the rear by cornering and braking at the same time) and thus point the car sooner towards corner exit. This technique allows the front tires to be straighter in order to get on the gas sooner with less power understeer. Of course, I still prefer rear drive cars (especially powerful ones) and find power oversteer more entertaining.

@:monkeypop. Excellent point regarding insurance on the vette:) When I was in high school I wanted the '79' Camero Z-28:) I got a '79' convertable Volkswagen bug insted. I was horribly pissed of. But I dropped 8k into it for a custom racing engine and transmition:) I was faster than porsche 914's in the quarter mile:) If I had gotton the Z-28 I'd probably be dead:)

I'm happy for you. I'm big about bang for the dollar. And you got a lot for the money. That being said. I have to agree with @'E'. With depreciation I would much rather get a used Corvette C-5 for $18 thousand in good condition. Granted..the corvette does NOT have a back seat if thats something you have to have. But it has a lot more prestiege than the little Cobalt with a bullet proof V-8 to boot.

pff most dont even try to **** with my turbo balt, and your exactly right, for the price i\'v payed to beat evo\'s and sti\'s... how could i go wrong
E 15y ago
If this was around when I was 16, I\'d get a used something or other. That\'s the thing with cheap cars, you can probably get a \"better\" old model of something else for the same price. This car is about 20,000. 10 seconds on google found me a C5 Corvette for $18,000 and a few more for $20-22,000. Of course, a new car is appealing for obvious reasons.
monkeypop 15y ago
You would have to be mad to take this over a evo/sti. But the point is that this is cheaper and could hold its own with those two cars.
Imagine you are a teenager trying to get your parents to sign for you at the dealer. The price of this car is so reasonable that you could get this rather than something like a civic or accord. If this would have been around when I was 16.. I would have had this rather than a damn accord.
E 15y ago
It has FWD. It is an Accord as far as I\'m concerned. I\'d wager the Evo and STi are a better drive, and they could certainly keep up with it.
matt 15y ago
i\'d love to see a civic keep up, and look at some of the cars it\'s beating, it costs alot less than quite a few cars its been running better than... & whats shit about it? zzp\'s shop car is running 500whp on the ss/tc
