Torque can be very important, or more accurately, the torque curve. If you have a lot of torque spread out over a wide RPM range, your car will accelerate out of turns quickly without the need to use time robbing gear changes. This is of course becoming less important with modern lightning quick shifters though.

Torque is not important. HP is important when talking about acceleration numbers.
