Honestly, I always thought this car was something of a joke, an unsuccessful testing the waters. Strange design, nothing special in terms of dynamics and a very high price.
However I was talking to the guy recently. He is a fan and collector of the BMW brand, a huge number of BMW sportscars have passed through his hands in almost 30 years. For example among others now he owns M3 E36, Z8, recent M4 CSL.... and this weirdo.
But, strangely enough, he considers Z1 to have the best handling balance of all the BMWs he ever driven. And despite lack of power it's very pleasuring and interesting to drive fast.

So it really has retractable doors?
I saw one and thought they removed the doors.
Really cool feature!
