That laptime is outstanding improvemnt over the old FWD laprecord... more power, limited slip diff, and high perfromance brembo brakes there you go...good job by the Chevy guys.. would not be surprised if Manuel Reuter was the driver.

Is that Ring lap official and is it a full lap? 8:22 is an amazing time for a car like this, faster than a Boxster S even though the Porsche is faster in a straight line, lighter and almost certainly handles better..... its also faster than the Impreza WRX STi and EVO...... I'd like to see some more lap times as this is suspiciously quick!

That's the first thing i thought too.

They say it was tested in Nordschleife throughout all development process and they say it now holds official lap record for production FWD cars.

Possible... GM has Opel in Germany and Opel use the same ecotec engine in the Astra OPC..but with lower power, without high perfromance brembo brakes without limited slip diff...and the Opel Astra OPC has set in 2005 the FWD record at the Ring for production cars with 8:35min... now add 20hp more and lot more torque.. brembo brakes and limited slip diff... there you are.. btw..why should they lie..they beat a record in their own hands.. (GM)

Anonymous 3 years ago
The OPC record was beaten (by a fraction of a second) by the Ford Focus ST..... that held the record until now.

Is there any reference link for that laptime?

no time clocked in the video

the 8:22 is recorded at the Nürbergring so stop talking so crap and live with it. An american car do better than a japaneses or german, until now that the renault megane broke the record for FWD and have only 230 ps.

Anonymous 2 years ago
What is this for a car can i buy it in germany....nice performance...only megane r26r is faster but it has semislick tyres.

The Max speed in this page is a bit off. According to GM's own data, with the factory low spoiler, the max speed is drag limited to 160mph. The factory option high spoiler, which was used to clock the time at Nordschleife, is drag limited to 155mph.

Unonamis 2 years ago
@RocketPunch cool picture! Actually it's 146 mph. http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/hot_lists/high_performance/s port_compacts/2008_chevrolet_cobalt_ss_short_take_road_test+t-specs+page-2.html< /a> Or at least it might be...

Anonymous 2 years ago
umm no unonamis to speed IS 160mph..http://www.roadandtrack.com/article.asp?section_id=3&article_id=6702...s o yeah.

Its funny how the rear suspension on this car is a piece of shit like the mustangs. Do not understand how the japanese would have a sporty suspension , but oh ya i forgot GM is tight on cash.

Roggio 1 year ago
Keep in mind that the Car and Driver numbers do not reflect the use of the "no-lift" feature. Their rules require them to lift the throttle between shifts. Road and Track lists performance as: 0-60 5.4 seconds and 1/4 mile in 13.9 @ 104mph.

venom 1 year ago
how is the suspension on this a piece of shit? handles better than a civic by a long shot. just because they use the word leaf doesnt make it shit, ever wonder how the zr1 gets faster slalom speeds and 0.9 g more lateral acceleration than an enzo even with run-flats?

PhantomPorsche 1 year ago
Even though this has leaf springs it may be most of the tires and diff that make the car handle so well. Just a theory so dont go crazy on me.

Anonymous 1 year ago
These kind of suspensions in mustangs and the cobalts just mean CHEAP, like the quality you can expect from most of these north-american cars. Have you ever seen the workers, they look like they just came from a booze can!!

The strategy is to sell a car with no problems and they will always come back to buy another, and when you sell a car with problems they wont come back. Well years of abusing the public with selling faulty cars just adds up to a bailout. Oh ya, dont buy a car made on monday.

"Even though this has leaf springs it may be most of the tires and diff that make the car handle so well"
