17 Quattro snowplow - this is why we need four wheel drive

Cover for Quattro snowplow - this is why we need four wheel drive

Some might not understand, where's the point in having the added weight and friction of transfer box, drive shaft or Quattro style transmission, when two wheel drive is enough for all but the very wetest and mudiest of days.

Those who live in a climate where lots of snowfall is common every winter will know that there is nothing like four wheel drive when you end up in one of those rural areas where snow is less frequently plowed and roads are fully covered with snow and salt mix.

This video illustrates the point in very spectacular fashion - what you see here is an Audi Quattro driver essentially building he's own lane in the very deep snow on the right side of the highway, while all the other "less gifted" two wheel drive driver have no option but to wait for the road to clear ahead.

After seeing something like this, the very annoying fanboy phrase "Quattro Power" seems nothing but perfectly appropriate.

Quattro power it is!

What also helped a lot was that snow had just fallen - it wasn't very dense and "heavy".

@Georg Not if the road is blocked by big truck :)

User avatar

Georg  12y ago

one big rock on the side would end that journey :) the guy in the Audi needs to know the street very well to do that..

This looks like an old school Audi on proper tyres. The new 4wd ones are often useless due to the high performance summer tyres they wear, ie. the RS4 and RS6. So, if you buy a 4WD car, make sure you get decent winter tyres for it!!

It hardly ever snows in Georgia, it did a couple years ago and everything shut down and everyone was driving so slowly, I could probably count their lugnuts on their wheels, and it was only a couple of inches of snow, I was out in it in my 2 wheel drive pickup and had no trouble, I couldn't get my oil changed because the dealership was closed, the banks were closed, I thought to myself "what a bunch of wimps" but of course, in Georgia, there are no snow plows, not that we needed one, and no road salt. I'm pretty sure there were a lot of people in my neck of the wood wishing they had 4 wheel drive that day.

Haha,uzreiz kā ieraudzīju šo,zināju,ka autors ir FastestLaps^^

@moegigo

No,that's obviously not the case here.Road is blocked by a lorry.
(They don't have winter tires by default btw)
So the other cars can't get past.
This Audi decided to solve the problem,by plowing its own lane.
Which none of 2wd cars would be able to.
And this is not America.Winter tires are mandatory here.Of course some people have outworn winter tires,or not so great all season ones. But thats just a fraction of general public.

Hans  12y ago

That was epic!
Try that with 2wd car :D

Well here the Problem are the bad (summer??) tyres of the other cars, not the 2wd!! On this flat course you should have little Problems with 2WD and good winter tyres!!

Actually I'm stayin in the mountains in Switzerland and I am pretty fine with 2WD and very good winter tyres even uphill. I often see Audi driver "racing" downhill the streets when theres snow on the street, believing that they will be save with their 4WD...lol

no actually I hate that because it's dangerous for other drivers on the street if some completely missunderstand the facts. Here there could be a bump/hole in the deep snow and the Audi driver can destroy his car very easy!

-> Would you like to drive downhill in winter when theres snow on the street, when you only manage drive this street uphill with a 4WD car...?

It's about tyres and if that is not good enough get some snow skid chaines or Spykes

@ Ferrari Driver: LOL, exept an Audi doesn't damage houses, run over other cars, and set people on fire! HAHAHAHAHA XD

EPIC WIN

If I had a Quattro I would not have to clean my driveway :D

Mental  12y ago

This Audi reminded me a "Dominator" LOL

Why people don't use their Audi to clean the streets from the snow?
My local communal services are working crappy, and all Audi owners could free the city's roads from snow :D
