As the owner of a Mk1 Impreza Turbo, I was sad to open my new issue of EVO last week and read the car of the year article. The new Impreza STI 330S finished square bottom of the pile, beaten by tiddlers such as the new Renault Twingo 133 and Fiat Abarth...Only ten short years ago, this car was the darling of the motor press, so what's gone wrong?
Well, Subaru dont seem to have moved on. The new car is much heavier (250 KG) than my old Mk1, the car is still damn thirsty and it seems no-one actually wants a hatchback rice rocket. Interestingly, the new EVO real world champ is a hot hatch, the Renault Megane R26R. Technology now means the FWD cars can pack 230 BHP in a lighter nimbler package than the RWD brigade, so where now for Subaru?
Personally I think they need to take a step back like Nissan did when she shelved the old Skyline. I would like to see a lighter car with a two litre direct injection engine, something like a flat 4 equivalent of the VAG TFSI. No more than 230-250 BHP. Ditch all the kit and go back to basics.
Driving my car in pouring rain this week down back-roads shows that 4WD still works in the UK, so Subaru needs to return to what it did best, an understated light, simple road rocket at a keen price. Anyone else got any thoughts? |
If you clicked the link you will see the the R26 was not the only car put on the dyno the Focus St was put on the same dyno made 226ps well within manufacturers claims so did the Astra VXR 244ps.
I did say this was a controversial subject and it is Renault lie about the power output of the R26 f1. Its a fact! They are cheaters and please research this matter if you wish the Seat Leon Cupra 240ps makes 261hp on the dyno this is true for all stock Cupras in my country.
Not sure about what you mean by "technology", if by that you mean it has a very limited production run, a stripped down interior, roll cage and R-Compound tires (as seen in FWD lap record config); Then yes. If the R26R had normal road tires, it will lost the record to a rental car.
Subaru simply lost their core fan base with the GR, cause no one wants to drive a minivan. Period.
Your article claim 247PS that are 17PS more than factory claim. Rolling roads are not accurate. For example sportauto car magazine dropped the idea to check manufactor power claims by sending all cars to a rolling road(to stop manufactors cheating with special prepared press cars). They did several tests and EVERY dyno they trayed was inacurate...they used a high power Audi RS6 and the different between the best and worst rolling road dyno was 60PS with exactly the same car, without any modification. They ended the test by uninstalling the engine and putting it on a real engine dyno were you can clock the real flywheel power. There the engine reached the exact factory claimed power. Sportauto droped the idea of dyno the test cars on rolling roads bcause they are not accurate enough..and uninstalling the engine to put them on a real engine dyno is much to expansive.
The acceleration numbers don´t look like the R26.R with the low weight and sticky tires has more than factory claimed 230PS... with 250PS the 0-100km/h time should drop with semi slicks and 2750lbs limited slip dif in the 5s range.. but it does not..
The R26.R is all about low weight high traction, braking and cornering.. not about straight line speed

“Have you voted yet? ;-)”
Yes I just did. I think you're too merciful when you opened this vote. You could just ban him straight away and nobody would complain.
