Is the Impreza Turbo finished?

15.11.2008
As the owner of a Mk1 Impreza Turbo, I was sad to open my new issue of EVO last week and read the car of the year article. The new Impreza STI 330S finished square bottom of the pile, beaten by tiddlers such as the new Renault Twingo 133 and Fiat Abarth...Only ten short years ago, this car was the darling of the motor press, so what's gone wrong?

Well, Subaru dont seem to have moved on. The new car is much heavier (250 KG) than my old Mk1, the car is still damn thirsty and it seems no-one actually wants a hatchback rice rocket. Interestingly, the new EVO real world champ is a hot hatch, the Renault Megane R26R. Technology now means the FWD cars can pack 230 BHP in a lighter nimbler package than the RWD brigade, so where now for Subaru?

Personally I think they need to take a step back like Nissan did when she shelved the old Skyline. I would like to see a lighter car with a two litre direct injection engine, something like a flat 4 equivalent of the VAG TFSI. No more than 230-250 BHP. Ditch all the kit and go back to basics.

Driving my car in pouring rain this week down back-roads shows that 4WD still works in the UK, so Subaru needs to return to what it did best, an understated light, simple road rocket at a keen price. Anyone else got any thoughts?

I have indeed Wads, and very good it is too, though I wish they'd make it easier to navigate!!!

Evo are talking out of their backsides once more. I've tested dozens of cars to replace my RX8 PZ over the past 2 years and finally picked up a 330S last month. It's a superb road car. It may not be an ideal track car but that could very easily be sorted with AST Coilovers, Whiteline bushes and strut braces and Roger Clark subframe bushes and ARBs. But I didn't buy it for the track. It offers all the fun you could want and yet can be relaxed and chilled when it needs to be. It really is all cars to all people, far more so than the ridiculously overpriced new GTi. Interestingly, both Car magazine and Japanese Performance have said the 330S is the best UK Impreza they've ever driven. If it has a flaw, the steering is over assisted, but it's thoroughly accurate and it does have feel, contrary to many of the magazine tests. It certainly has more feel then my 2001 Civic Type R had. I used to respect Evo but they're a sad shadow of their former selves these days.

I dont have any grudge against you or anything but it does upset me when people are faced with common sense and just ignore it. Yes 5 different dynos will give 5 different results but im talking about 1 DYNO which all the cars were tested on the exact same day!!! Yes it is true about different dynos giving different results however you are sadly mistaken to say huge difference in power results. You know a little Georg better educate yourself fully before you spew out what garbage you pick up from the internet and other misinformed people, you make yourself look foolish. So your last reply was totally meaningless !!!

Sad news today which confirms Subaru have lost the plot..... they are pulling out of the World Rally Championship.

HAHAHA Mr Fake My Name..lol does that dude have a Grudge with you or sumtin??

again Mr fake my name... rolling road dynos are not 100% correct, put the same car on 5 different dynos and you get 5 different results with huge different in power numbers..

Sorry man but it is a fact that the R26 f1 does not make 230hp. In my country we also have dyno days and no R26 in stock form pushed out less than 245ps whereas other cars like the Focus St and Golf GTi where all within the what manufacturers claim on the same dyno on the same day.

If you clicked the link you will see the the R26 was not the only car put on the dyno the Focus St was put on the same dyno made 226ps well within manufacturers claims so did the Astra VXR 244ps.

I did say this was a controversial subject and it is Renault lie about the power output of the R26 f1. Its a fact! They are cheaters and please research this matter if you wish the Seat Leon Cupra 240ps makes 261hp on the dyno this is true for all stock Cupras in my country.

"the Renault Megane R26R. Technology now means the FWD cars can pack 230 BHP in a lighter nimbler package than the RWD brigade, so where now for Subaru?"

Not sure about what you mean by "technology", if by that you mean it has a very limited production run, a stripped down interior, roll cage and R-Compound tires (as seen in FWD lap record config); Then yes. If the R26R had normal road tires, it will lost the record to a rental car.

Subaru simply lost their core fan base with the GR, cause no one wants to drive a minivan. Period.

The R26R is no different to the likes of the 997 GT3RS, its all about making the most extreme performance hatchback. hats off to Renault for ditching kit when everyone else is larding up their so-called drivers cars with sat nav and leather - Civic Type R hang your head - I am sure its pushing out 230PS. The Standard R26 F1 did 0.-100 in 16 seconds in the hands of EVO. This was barely faster than the heavier Focus ST which claims only 220 PS.

Renault does not cheat...
Your article claim 247PS that are 17PS more than factory claim. Rolling roads are not accurate. For example sportauto car magazine dropped the idea to check manufactor power claims by sending all cars to a rolling road(to stop manufactors cheating with special prepared press cars). They did several tests and EVERY dyno they trayed was inacurate...they used a high power Audi RS6 and the different between the best and worst rolling road dyno was 60PS with exactly the same car, without any modification. They ended the test by uninstalling the engine and putting it on a real engine dyno were you can clock the real flywheel power. There the engine reached the exact factory claimed power. Sportauto droped the idea of dyno the test cars on rolling roads bcause they are not accurate enough..and uninstalling the engine to put them on a real engine dyno is much to expansive.
The acceleration numbers don´t look like the R26.R with the low weight and sticky tires has more than factory claimed 230PS... with 250PS the 0-100km/h time should drop with semi slicks and 2750lbs limited slip dif in the 5s range.. but it does not..
The R26.R is all about low weight high traction, braking and cornering.. not about straight line speed

Well it is a controversial subject but renault lie about the output of their R26 and R26.R The R26 pushes out more like 250hp and R26.R even more although renault say 230hp.

But the R26R is hardly a practical hot hatch as it doesn't have any rear seats (does it even have a boot?)

I think the car that has finished the current Impreza is the R26 F1 Megane. It's a fwd hatch that can keep up with pretty much any 4wd car. If you read Autocar's article this summer which involved taking a variety of cars round the Millbrook hill route, the Megane beat an STI impreza by 2 seconds, despite being 70 BHP down on power, that's gotta hurt, if you've shelled out on the latest uber scooby! The R26R pushes the boundaries back even more. I reckon Renaultsport has taken over the Subaru affordable hero mantra.

Yes I just did. I think you're too merciful when you opened this vote. You could just ban him straight away and nobody would complain.

the 09 wrx sedan and 08wrx sedan are good cars but you seem to be forgeting that the wrx sti 08 and maybe 09 is still a 4dr hatchback remember when it come's to impreza's it's either wrx sti or nothing because the normal impreza is regarded as a boring family car it's only good a a wrx or most prefiberly wrx sti.i am happy they made a new sedan model of the new impreza wrx but they need to turn the new wrx sti back into a sedan.i mean i only think the wrx sti is only good as a hatchback if it's for WRC.in the real world people want a wrx sti sedan.

Well, 2009 WRX is much faster and has much better handling than 2008 WRX as well as comes as a sedan. It has 265BHP and 343 Nm of torque, standing start is 13.27, 0-100 time is 5.1 sec. It's lighter than STi and does 0.87 on a skid pad (STi does 0.90). And it costs the same!

Subaru could have improved the Imprezza further by puting active diffs like the Evo X to improve steering response. The styling could also have been improved upon, an old Subaru weak spot. I have nothing against moving to a hatchback for the STI, if WRC techonology dictates it, so be it. But retaining a 4 door STI version would have been more prudent to keep the existing fans happy.
