2008 Cobalt SS Turbo wants to be taken seriously

29.10.2007
The new 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt SS surprises everyone. Especially those who think that American sports cars are hopelessly unsophisticated and incapable of going around bends. The first car to brake this stereotype was Ford GT but it is an expensive hyper-car that no one (except some lucky few) can afford, plus, it is not really that American either. Then came the Corvette C6 and Corvette C6 ZO6 - also known as "The super-car killer". It shows amazing performance at racetracks around the world and it has unbeatable performance-price ratio. New Cobalt SS has potential of repeating the success of Corvette C6 Z06.

Coming in at 260 HP / 260 lb-ft, the SS/TC gains a full 55 horses over the now-defunct SS/SC. Power, of course, is sourced from the same 2.0L direct-injected, turbocharged, intercooled sledgehammer found under the bonnets of the Pontiac Solstice GXP, Saturn Sky Red Line, and forthcoming Chevy HHR SS. The GM Performance Division was tasked with making sure the improved Cobalt SS is well-sorted, and John Heinricy and company dialed in the FE5 sport suspension on the undulating twists and turns of the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The result, says GM, is a track-capable suspension that's still comfortable on the street, and which helps mitigate FWD performance foibles like torque steer.

The standard transmission is the GM Powertrain Sweden F35 short-throw 5-speed manual with a "no-lift shift" feature. This, combined with the punchy turbo four, helps propel the Cobalt SS Turbocharged from 0 to 60 in a scant 5.7 seconds. In fact, GM set a Nürburgring class record for FWD sport compacts with the turbo Cobalt, lapping the Green Hell in 8:22.85. Better braking accompanies the added power with 4-piston fixed-caliper Brembos in front and vented discs with single-piston calipers in the rear. A driver-selectable competition mode with launch control can be enabled from the cockpit. Beyond that, the traction control system can be completely disabled.

if these american companys really wanna make waves, it needs to be rwd, weigh less than 2500lbs, boast 300hp, and sticker for under under 20k. their are enough fwd trainer cars out there already.

lol 27.02.2008
why dont you go out and manufacture your own light weight rwd 300hp car then and stop thinking you know whats best for companies when is the last time u saw a car like that for cheap u idiot you, mister know it all, make it sound like its such an easy thing to do and that they haven't thought their decisions through at all

to anonymous 09.03.2008
because they want to make it a daily driver with high performance.. it either needs to be awd or fwd.. rwd sucks ass on anything but dry pavemment.. and wtf.. 300hp and under 20k.. . you dumbass that will never happen. they did a good job and 0-60 is 5.7 is pretty damn impressive
